Our Mission

The main goal of the Estonian Society for Transfusion Medicine (ETMS) is to introduce and implement modern evidence-based principles of transfusion medicine, also known as Blood Management, in Estonia.

The society contributes to shaping national healthcare policies and legislation related to transfusion medicine in cooperation with other medical societies, organizations, the Ministry of Social Affairs, and the Estonian Health Insurance Fund. Its members include physicians, nurses, midwives, and specialists working in the field across Estonia.

ETMS was founded as a non-profit organization on January 13, 2004, and is the legal successor of the Estonian Blood Service Society, established in 1995.

The logo of the society—depicting a hand holding a drop of blood—symbolizes the core principle of modern transfusion medicine: the most valuable blood is the patient’s own. It is the responsibility of medical professionals to preserve it using every available means.
